
Rail Trail Usage
General Information for Trail Users
Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail (GRHCRT) is a multi-use recreational pathway that has been developed on a former railway easement that has been set aside for recreational use including cycling, walking, horse riding and other activities.
The rail trail is open 24/7 to the general public and will not be closed for any specific event, other than that to protect, repair or maintain the reserve. Bicycle and horse riders entering the Trail Reserve must have a sufficient level of competence and be equipped to be independent during their visit.
Code of Conduct signage is placed at major entry points to the Trail which includes location details and contact details for the Shire which is responsible for that section of the trail.
Trail Etiquette
Respect the rights of other users at all times:
- Keep left and do not obstruct the trail
- Cyclists give way to walkers
- Alert other users of your approach
- Pass on the right at a reduced speed
- Call out to horse riders to advise of your approach
- Park in designated parking areas where provided
- Don’ t block access tracks and driveways
- Leave gates as you find them
- Observe signs and regulations
- Leave all flora and fauna undisturbed
- Take your rubbish home or use bins provided
- No firewood collection
- Camp in designated areas only
- Fires are prohibited in the reserve
Dogs & Horses
- Ride horses off the bike/walking track unless signage indicates otherwise
- The horse must be ridden at a walking pace when on the track formed for walking and bike riding
- Horse riding groups exceeding 10 riders require permits from the appropriate Shire Council
- Horse manure must be removed from the pavement formed for walking and bike riding
- Dogs should be kept on a leash and under control at all times
- Dog faeces must be removed from the reserve
- Take care at road crossings
- Observe all signs and local regulations
- Check weather conditions before travel
- Be prepared for changes in conditions including trail surfaces, wind, fire, flood
- Plan your journey and advise someone before you go
- Approved helmets must be worn at all times
- Be particularly cautious on days of total fire ban
- Always carry sufficient water for your trip
- Be prepared with sunscreen and insect repellent
Crown Land Reserves (Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail Reserve) Regulations 2010 apply to this reserve. Copies of these regulations are available from Mansfield Shire Council, Murrindindi Shire Council and Mitchell Shire Council offices.
Motor vehicles (other than maintenance or emergency vehicles) including motor bikes are not permitted on the trail, penalties apply.
Neither the Committee of Management nor any other agency responsible for Crown Land Management takes any responsibility for the consequences of any person using the Rail Trail.
Permits maybe required for some events or activities, including commercial business undertakings, contact the appropriate Shire for more information.
